Five years. Five books. Approximately one million complicated relationships, ancient magical objects, and reasons to question the Inner Circle's decision-making.

ACOTAR books by Sarah J. Maas arranged for a recap before A Court of Splintered Harmony

And now Sarah J. Maas is finally taking us back to Prythian.

A Court of Splintered Harmony, the sixth installment in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series and the beginning of The Valkyrie Cycle, arrives October 27, 2026. Its follow-up, A Court of Forgotten Melody, is scheduled for January 12, 2027.

Which is exciting, obviously. But it also means we have to remember what happened in A Court of Silver Flames, where everyone stands romantically, who has mysterious magical powers, and why there's still an ancient death god hanging around.

If your last ACOTAR reread was approximately three personality changes ago, we've got you.

This is your full spoiler refresher before ACOTAR Book 6, including the major plot points, character relationships, lingering mysteries, and details that might matter going into A Court of Splintered Harmony.

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for all five previously published ACOTAR books, including A Court of Silver Flames. A later section contains additional spoilers for Crescent City: House of Flame and Shadow. No leaked Book 6 material is included.

ACOTAR in 60 Seconds: The 8 Things You Need to Remember

Need the crash course before diving into Book 6? Here are the biggest developments.

1. Feyre and Rhysand are parents. Their son Nyx survives a dangerous birth after Nesta sacrifices most of her extraordinary power to save Feyre and the baby.

2. Nesta and Cassian are officially together. After one of the most emotionally exhausting relationship journeys in Prythian, they've accepted their mating bond.

3. The Valkyries are back. Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie have revived the ancient female warrior tradition, trained together, and survived the Blood Rite. These women are not here to be background characters.

4. Elain and Lucien's mating bond remains unresolved. Lucien knows Elain is his mate. Elain has not accepted the bond, and their relationship remains painfully awkward.

5. Azriel's romantic situation is a mess. His attraction to Elain is complicated by her bond with Lucien, Rhysand's political concerns, and a bonus chapter that introduces even more questions about Gwyn.

6. Koschei the Deathless is still a threat. The ancient being remains confined to his lake, but he's manipulating events beyond it. The situation with Vassa and the human queens is far from over.

7. The Dread Trove is a major magical wildcard. Nesta has wielded the Mask, Harp, and Crown, and their connection to the Cauldron and ancient history remains important.

8. The peace after Hybern is fragile. Beron, the human queens, and unresolved court politics are still major concerns. Winning one war apparently doesn't mean anyone gets to relax.

The bottom line: Feyre and Rhys have a family, Nesta has found her people, Elain's story is far from settled, and ancient magic is becoming everyone's problem again.

And that's where we are heading into A Court of Splintered Harmony.

Where the ACOTAR Series Left Off

At the beginning of A Court of Thorns and Roses, Feyre Archeron was a human hunting in the woods to keep her family alive.

Now she's the High Lady of the Night Court, married to one of the most powerful High Lords in Prythian, and raising a child who almost killed her during childbirth.

We've come a long way from the Spring Court.

But to understand why Book 6 matters, we need to remember how the world got here.

A Court of Thorns and Roses: The Curse That Started Everything

Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, only to discover that the animal was actually a faerie.

As punishment, she's taken across the wall into Prythian by Tamlin, High Lord of the Spring Court.

What begins as a Beauty and the Beast-inspired romance eventually reveals a much larger problem: Amarantha, who has enslaved the High Lords and their courts.

Feyre goes Under the Mountain, survives Amarantha's trials, and dies after defeating her. The seven High Lords resurrect Feyre as High Fae, giving her pieces of their power.

She leaves with Tamlin, but her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the Night Court, is only beginning to matter.

A Court of Mist and Fury: Everything Changes

Feyre's relationship with Tamlin deteriorates as his attempts to protect her become increasingly controlling.

Rhysand brings Feyre to the Night Court, where she begins recovering from her trauma, learns to use her powers, and discovers a different kind of family.

Enter Cassian, Azriel, Mor, Amren, and the rest of the Inner Circle.

Feyre eventually learns that Rhysand is her mate. Their relationship becomes the emotional center of the series, while the growing threat from Hybern puts all of Prythian in danger.

Meanwhile, Feyre's sisters, Nesta and Elain, are forcibly transformed into High Fae through the Cauldron.

Elain emerges with a mating bond to Lucien. Nesta emerges with something much more dangerous.

She takes power from the Cauldron itself.

A Court of Wings and Ruin: The War With Hybern

Prythian goes to war against the King of Hybern, whose forces threaten to conquer the courts and human lands.

The alliances are complicated, the stakes are enormous, and just about everyone has unfinished business.

Feyre and Rhys help unite the courts and armies against Hybern. Nesta and Elain become central to the final confrontation. Nesta uses her connection to the Cauldron to help locate it, while Elain ultimately stabs the King of Hybern with Truth-Teller. Nesta finishes him.

Their father is killed during the war, leaving the sisters with another enormous loss.

Rhysand dies restoring the Cauldron, but the High Lords bring him back.

The war ends, Hybern is defeated, and the immediate threat has passed.

But Prythian is left with a fragile peace, political divisions, and plenty of trauma nobody has properly dealt with.

A Court of Frost and Starlight: The Aftermath (aka the Christmas Special)

This novella bridges the war and Nesta's story.

The Night Court is rebuilding. Feyre and Rhys are settling into their new life together. The Inner Circle is attempting some version of normalcy.

Nesta, however, is struggling.

She's withdrawn from her family, drinks heavily, isolates herself, and refuses the help people keep offering her.

Cassian wants to reach her, but their relationship is strained by everything they've been through.

Which brings us to A Court of Silver Flames.

What Happened in A Court of Silver Flames?

While the first three ACOTAR novels primarily follow Feyre, A Court of Silver Flames moves the spotlight to Nesta Archeron and Cassian.

And it's not just a romance. It's a story about trauma, anger, shame, friendship, and figuring out who you are when you don't particularly like yourself.

Nesta Is Sent to the House of Wind

After months of self-destructive behavior, Nesta is given an ultimatum by Feyre and the Inner Circle.

She must live at the House of Wind, train with Cassian, and work in the library, or leave for the human lands.

Nesta is furious.

Her relationship with Feyre is strained. Her connection with Cassian is complicated. And her own feelings about what happened during the war are making everything worse.

But slowly, the structure of training and work begins to give her something she hasn't had in a long time: purpose.

Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie Rebuild the Valkyries

One of the most important developments in Silver Flames isn't romantic. It's the friendship between Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie.

Gwyn is a priestess living and working in the library beneath the House of Wind. Emerie is an Illyrian woman who runs her own shop and has fought to build a life in a deeply restrictive society.

Together, the three women begin training in the style of the ancient Valkyries. Their friendship becomes a source of strength, and the training develops into a larger effort to give other women the opportunity to learn to fight.

By the end of the novel, Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie are forced into the brutal Illyrian Blood Rite.

Despite being targeted and manipulated into participating, they survive. Nesta sacrifices her own chance to finish the climb to defend her friends, while Gwyn and Emerie reach the summit of Ramiel.

The Valkyries have returned.

And we would be very surprised if Maas spent that much time rebuilding this warrior tradition just to forget about it.

Nesta and Cassian Finally Accept Their Mating Bond

Nesta and Cassian's relationship is one long exercise in emotional avoidance.

There's attraction. There's resentment. There are feelings neither one particularly wants to discuss.

And there is an enormous amount of unresolved personal trauma. As Nesta begins to heal and accept herself, her relationship with Cassian deepens.

Eventually, they acknowledge their mating bond and choose a future together.

It's a significant turning point for Nesta, who has spent much of the series believing she is fundamentally unworthy of love.

By the end of Silver Flames, their relationship is no longer a question of whether they want one another.

They do.

The question is what their lives will look like as Nesta steps into a larger role in Prythian.

The Dread Trove: What It Is and Why It Matters

Now we need to talk about the terrifying magical objects.

Because this is Sarah J. Maas, and no ancient artifact can simply stay buried. The Dread Trove consists of powerful objects Made by the Cauldron.

The three main objects identified in A Court of Silver Flames are:

The Mask: Gives its wearer control over the dead.

The Harp: Can open doors and passages, and manipulate aspects of space and time.

The Crown: Can influence and control the minds of others.

Nesta has a unique ability to sense and wield Made objects because of her connection to the Cauldron.

This makes her enormously valuable and potentially dangerous. There's also a suggestion that a fourth object exists, connected to the Trove's older history.

The important thing to remember is that the Trove's power is not ordinary court magic.

It's ancient, difficult to control, and connected to forces that predate much of Prythian's current political order.

In other words, exactly the sort of thing that tends to become a problem again.

How A Court of Silver Flames Ends

The climax of Silver Flames brings together Nesta's personal story, the renewed Valkyries, and the political threat from Queen Briallyn.

Briallyn's Plan Falls Apart

Briallyn, the human queen transformed into an aged and bitter immortal by the Cauldron, is determined to take revenge.

Working with dangerous magic and powerful allies, she helps orchestrate the events that place Nesta and the other Valkyries in the Blood Rite.

Briallyn uses the Crown to control Cassian and threatens Nesta.

But Nesta ultimately defeats and kills Briallyn, ending that immediate threat.

Unfortunately, Briallyn was not the only person interested in Prythian's magical power.

Feyre Nearly Dies Giving Birth to Nyx

At the same time, Feyre's pregnancy becomes life-threatening.

Her baby has Illyrian wings, and the delivery puts both Feyre and Nyx at risk. Because of the bargain linking Feyre and Rhysand's lives, Rhys is also in danger.

Nesta arrives as Feyre is dying and uses the Harp and her connection to the Cauldron to bargain for the power needed to save her sister and the baby.

She gives up most of the enormous power she took from the Cauldron.

But the Mother allows her to retain a portion of it.

Feyre survives. Nyx survives. Rhys survives.

And Nesta saves the family she has spent so much of the story struggling to connect with.

It's an enormous moment of healing for the Archeron sisters.

It also means Feyre and Rhysand are now parents, which creates an entirely new set of personal and political stakes for the Night Court.

The Biggest Unresolved Plot Threads Before ACOTAR Book 6

The war against Hybern may be over, but Prythian is nowhere close to peaceful.

These are the storylines I'd pay the closest attention to.

1. Elain and Lucien Still Haven't Resolved Their Mating Bond

Elain Archeron was Made into a High Fae against her will. Almost immediately, Lucien Vanserra recognized her as his mate. And Elain has spent much of the series avoiding the situation. She has not accepted the bond, and their relationship remains unresolved.

Lucien continues to exist somewhat between worlds: tied to the Spring Court, working with the Night Court, and building friendships with Vassa and Jurian in the human lands.

He also has an enormous secret surrounding his parentage. Helion, High Lord of the Day Court, is strongly implied to be his biological father, rather than Beron. Lucien doesn't know the truth.

With Elain's mating bond unresolved and the politics of Prythian still unstable, there is plenty of material left to explore.

2. Azriel, Elain, and Gwyn Are a Complicated Situation

Azriel has feelings for Elain. Elain appears attracted to him as well.

But her existing mating bond to Lucien creates serious political and personal complications.

In the Silver Flames Azriel bonus chapter, Rhysand intervenes and orders Azriel to stay away from Elain, concerned about the consequences of a confrontation with Lucien.

Azriel also has an encounter with Gwyn, whose presence seems increasingly significant.

The chapter leaves readers with questions, not a confirmed romantic outcome. There are multiple possible directions for this storyline, and we're not going to pretend theories are canon just because someone made a very persuasive TikTok.

What is confirmed is that Azriel's feelings, Elain's agency, and Lucien's bond are all unresolved.

3. Koschei the Deathless Is Still Out There

Koschei is an ancient, powerful being imprisoned at a lake on the continent.

He's connected to the cursed firebird queen Vassa and has been manipulating events through others. Briallyn's actions in Silver Flames are tied to this larger threat.

Even after her death, Koschei remains.

His exact plans and the limits of his imprisonment have not been fully revealed.

Vassa's fate also remains uncertain, making Lucien and Jurian's connections to her potentially important.

Koschei is one of the most obvious unresolved threats going into the next phase of the series.

4. Beron and the Autumn Court Remain a Problem

Beron, High Lord of the Autumn Court, has never been particularly interested in behaving like a trustworthy ally.

His political maneuvering, cruelty toward his family, and willingness to pursue his own interests make the Autumn Court a persistent source of instability. Eris, Beron's eldest son, is far more complicated than he first appears. He's willing to make strategic alliances with the Night Court, but his ultimate intentions remain uncertain.

And if the truth about Lucien's parentage becomes public, the political consequences could be enormous.

5. Mor and Eris Still Have Unfinished History

Mor and Eris have one of the longest-running unresolved histories in the series.

We know that their past involves Mor's brutal treatment by her family and the collapse of a proposed marriage.

But Eris has repeatedly suggested that the full story is more complicated than the Inner Circle understands. We still don't have all the details. Whatever actually happened between them could change how readers understand Eris and his relationship with the Night Court.

6. The Valkyries Have Only Just Begun

Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie have established themselves as formidable warriors.

But rebuilding the Valkyries isn't simply a matter of winning one trial. Their training, friendships, and potential role in future conflicts leave a great deal of room for expansion.

And the new books being presented as The Valkyrie Cycle certainly make this storyline worth watching.

That said, the title alone doesn't tell us which character will narrate the next book or exactly how the Valkyries will be involved.

7. Elain's Powers Are Still Mysterious

Elain emerged from the Cauldron with seer abilities, allowing her to perceive events beyond ordinary sight. Her visions played an important role during the conflict with Hybern.

But compared with Feyre and Nesta, Elain's magical abilities and potential remain largely unexplored. She's often treated as the quieter Archeron sister, but quiet is not the same thing as powerless.

What Elain can see, what she knows, and what she chooses to do with that knowledge could be enormously important.

Where Everyone Stands Before A Court of Splintered Harmony

Feyre Archeron: High Lady of the Night Court, married to Rhysand and mother to Nyx. Her role has changed enormously since the beginning of the series.

Rhysand: High Lord of the Night Court, Feyre's mate, and Nyx's father. Still managing a fragile political landscape.

Nesta Archeron: Cassian's mate, a Valkyrie, and a Made female who retains some of her extraordinary magical abilities.

Cassian: General of the Night Court's armies, Nesta's mate, and a key figure in training the revived Valkyries.

Elain Archeron: Living in the Night Court, possessing seer abilities, and still linked to Lucien by an unaccepted mating bond.

Lucien Vanserra: Working between multiple political factions, connected to Vassa and Jurian, and unaware of the truth strongly implied about his parentage.

Azriel: The Night Court's shadowsinger and spymaster, with unresolved romantic feelings and an increasingly complicated personal story.

Gwyn Berdara: A priestess, survivor, and Valkyrie whose role in the Night Court is growing.

Emerie: An Illyrian shop owner and Valkyrie who has helped rebuild the female warrior tradition.

Mor: A member of the Inner Circle with unresolved history involving Eris and significant connections beyond the Night Court.

Eris Vanserra: Heir to the Autumn Court, an uneasy Night Court ally, and someone who knows more than he's telling.

Vassa: A human queen cursed into a firebird form and still connected to Koschei.

Koschei: An ancient imprisoned being whose influence remains a major threat.

Nyx: Feyre and Rhysand's son. Small child. Enormous consequences for everyone around him.

Bonus: Do You Need to Read Crescent City Before ACOTAR Book 6?

Additional spoiler warning: The following section reveals major events from House of Flame and Shadow, the third Crescent City novel.

This is where things get especially interesting.

Sarah J. Maas has connected the worlds of A Court of Thorns and Roses and Crescent City, and the crossover adds important context to Prythian's magical history.

In House of Flame and Shadow, Bryce Quinlan arrives in Prythian and encounters Nesta and Azriel.

During her time there, she uncovers information about the ancient Fae, the Daglan, and the history of magical power across worlds. The revelations connect Prythian's ancient history to the Asteri of Crescent City.

Nesta and Azriel become directly involved in this storyline, and magical objects such as Truth-Teller, the Starsword/Gwydion, and the Dread Trove take on additional significance.

The crossover also raises questions about the history of the Prison island and its connection to an ancient Dusk Court.

By the end of the crossover, Bryce returns to Midgard, but the implications for Prythian don't simply disappear. Nesta receives the Starsword/Gwydion from Bryce, a potentially significant development for future ACOTAR stories.

Does that mean you absolutely have to read all of Crescent City before Book 6?

Not necessarily. No one outside the publication team can say exactly how much crossover knowledge the new story will require.

But if you want the fullest possible understanding of the ancient magic, Nesta's involvement, and the lore connecting Maas's worlds, House of Flame and Shadow adds meaningful context.

And if you don't have time for another enormous fantasy series before October 27, at least know this: Prythian's history is much bigger than the seven courts we've spent the last five books exploring.

What We Know About A Court of Splintered Harmony

Here's what is officially confirmed:

  • Title: A Court of Splintered Harmony

  • Author: Sarah J. Maas

  • Release date: October 27, 2026

  • Series: A Court of Thorns and Roses, Book 6

  • New story arc: The Valkyrie Cycle

  • Follow-up: A Court of Forgotten Melody, scheduled for January 12, 2027

What we don't want to do is confuse fan theories, promotional clues, or online speculation with actual plot revelations.

Questions about which Archeron sister will take center stage, the future of the mating bonds, and how the larger magical threats will develop are still questions.

And personally, we think it's more fun when the book gets to answer some of them.

ACOTAR Book 6: Frequently Asked Questions

What should I remember before reading ACOTAR Book 6?

The most important developments are Nesta's transformation and renewed Valkyries, Feyre and Rhysand's son Nyx, Elain's unresolved mating bond with Lucien, Azriel's complicated romantic situation, the continuing threat from Koschei, and the mystery surrounding ancient Made objects.

What happened at the end of A Court of Silver Flames?

Did Nesta lose all her powers?

No. Nesta gives up most of the power she took from the Cauldron to save Feyre and Nyx, but retains some magical power through the Mother's intervention.

Are Nesta and Cassian mates?

Yes. Their mating bond is acknowledged and accepted in A Court of Silver Flames.

Has Elain accepted Lucien's mating bond?

No. Their bond remains unaccepted and their relationship unresolved going into the next book.

Is ACOTAR Book 6 about Elain?

Elain has several unresolved storylines, but readers should distinguish theories about her role from officially confirmed details. The title and release date alone don't establish her as the sole protagonist.

Who is Koschei in ACOTAR?

Koschei the Deathless is an ancient, powerful being confined to a lake on the continent. He is connected to Vassa's curse and remains an unresolved antagonist.

Do I need to read Crescent City before ACOTAR Book 6?

It may be helpful, particularly House of Flame and Shadow, which expands the ancient Fae lore and includes Nesta and Azriel. But the exact amount of crossover knowledge required for Book 6 remains to be seen.

When does ACOTAR Book 7 come out?

A Court of Forgotten Melody is scheduled for January 12, 2027.

Not Ready to Leave Prythian? Neither Are We.

It's been years since our last full-length ACOTAR book, and somehow we still have questions about mating bonds, the Cauldron, the Autumn Court, and approximately every decision this group of extremely powerful people makes.

Which is exactly why we have things to say.
