Five books, seven courts, three Archeron sisters, approximately fourteen thousand years of emotional baggage, and a romantic situation so complicated it might actually require a spreadsheet.

ACOTAR Book

Welcome back to Prythian.

With A Court of Splintered Harmony arriving October 27, 2026, we're preparing to return to the world of A Court of Thorns and Roses. And while you might remember the major plot points, keeping track of who's related, who's mated, who's secretly in love, and who's potentially plotting someone's downfall is an entirely different challenge.

Especially when everyone is hundreds of years old and has been holding grudges for most of that time.

So here's your complete ACOTAR character and relationship refresher before Book 6, including the Archeron sisters, the Night Court's Inner Circle, the mating bonds, romantic complications, family secrets, and unresolved mysteries that still have readers arguing.

SPOILER WARNING: We're discussing everything through A Court of Silver Flames, including its Azriel bonus chapter. We won't spoil A Court of Splintered Harmony or discuss leaked content.

ACOTAR Relationships in 60 Seconds: Who's With Whom?

Before we unpack the complicated stuff, here's the quick version.

1. Feyre and Rhysand: Mates, married, ruling the Night Court together, and parents to Nyx. Established. Committed. Still making dramatic decisions.

2. Nesta and Cassian: Confirmed mates who officially embrace their relationship in A Court of Silver Flames. Their journey from enemies-with-benefits to emotionally functional adults was quite the undertaking.

3. Elain and Lucien: Confirmed mates, but Elain has not accepted the bond. The romantic equivalent of leaving someone on read for several books.

4. Elain and Azriel: Mutual attraction is strongly indicated, but they aren't together. Rhysand has explicitly warned Azriel against pursuing her.

5. Azriel and Gwyn: Not a confirmed romantic couple or mating bond. Their interactions, especially in the bonus chapter, have inspired plenty of theories.

6. Mor and Azriel: Azriel carried feelings for Mor for centuries, but those feelings were not reciprocated romantically.

7. Lucien and Vassa: Friends and allies, with chemistry that some readers interpret romantically. Nothing has been confirmed.

8. Eris and Mor: A disastrous, centuries-old history involving a broken engagement and the kind of family trauma that makes Thanksgiving uncomfortable.

The bottom line: Two Archeron sisters have settled mating bonds, the third has an unresolved one, and Azriel is somehow involved in enough romantic speculation to sustain an entire publishing industry.

Now, let's get into it.

The Archeron Sisters: Where Everything Starts

The entire ACOTAR series began with three human sisters who were struggling to survive.

Now they're immortal Fae with enormous magical potential, extremely powerful romantic partners, and enough trauma to keep a therapist employed indefinitely.

Feyre Archeron: High Lady of the Night Court

Court: Night Court

Mate: Rhysand

Family: Sisters Nesta and Elain; son Nyx

Powers: Abilities inherited from the seven High Lords, including shapeshifting and elemental magic

Status before Book 6: High Lady, wife, and mother

Feyre's journey has taken her from a human hunting in the woods to one of the most politically significant figures in Prythian.

After her relationship with Tamlin ends, she discovers that Rhysand is her mate and builds a life within the Night Court.

By A Court of Silver Flames, Feyre and Rhys have welcomed their son, Nyx, after a life-threatening birth.

Nesta ultimately saves Feyre and the baby, repairing some of the damage between the sisters.

What matters going into Book 6: Feyre is no longer simply fighting for her own survival. She has a child, a court, a family, and political responsibilities that change the stakes of every future conflict.

Nesta Archeron: The Reluctant Valkyrie

Court: Night Court

Mate: Cassian

Friends: Gwyn Berdara and Emerie

Powers: Cauldron-given abilities, with most of her original power sacrificed at the end of Silver Flames

Status before Book 6: Valkyrie, Cassian's mate, and a Made Fae

Nesta has spent much of the series being angry. At her circumstances. At Feyre. At the world. At herself.

But A Court of Silver Flames forces Nesta to confront her trauma, accept friendship, and decide what kind of person she wants to become. Through training with Cassian, she forms a close friendship with Gwyn and Emerie. Together they revive the ancient Valkyrie tradition and survive the Illyrian Blood Rite.

Nesta also confronts the power she stole from the Cauldron and ultimately sacrifices most of it to save Feyre and Nyx.

What matters going into Book 6: Nesta's connection to ancient magic, the Dread Trove, and the Valkyries gives her a role that extends far beyond being Cassian's mate.

Elain Archeron: The Sister We Still Don't Fully Know

Court: Night Court

Confirmed mate: Lucien Vanserra

Romantic complication: Azriel

Powers: Seer abilities

Status before Book 6: Unmated in practice, with an unaccepted mating bond

Elain may be the most underestimated Archeron sister.

She's often described as gentle, quiet, and interested in gardening. But she also survived being forced into the Cauldron, developed prophetic abilities, and stabbed the King of Hybern during the final battle. Not exactly helpless.

Her romantic situation, however, is a mess.

Lucien recognized her as his mate immediately after her transformation, but Elain has shown little interest in developing that relationship.

Meanwhile, she has grown closer to Azriel, who appears attracted to her.

Unlike Feyre and Nesta, Elain hasn't yet been the central narrator of her own full-length story.

What matters going into Book 6: Elain's choices, her unexplored magical abilities, and her feelings about Lucien and Azriel remain unresolved.

And we would very much like to hear from the woman herself.

The Night Court Inner Circle: Who Everyone Is

The Inner Circle is Rhysand's closest group of friends, advisers, and warriors.

They've survived wars, torture, betrayals, and centuries of political maneuvering.

Have they mastered healthy communication?

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Rhysand: High Lord of the Night Court

Mate: Feyre

Son: Nyx

Closest allies: Cassian, Azriel, Mor, and Amren

Rhysand is one of the most powerful High Lords in Prythian and serves as the political and emotional center of the Night Court. His relationship with Feyre has anchored much of the series.

But becoming a father and rebuilding after Hybern have added new responsibilities.

Rhys also has a complicated history with the other courts, especially the Autumn and Spring Courts.

And his intervention in Azriel and Elain's relationship suggests that even the Inner Circle's romantic lives can create political problems.

Unresolved issue: How far will Rhys go to protect his court and family when personal relationships threaten political alliances?

Cassian: General, Valkyrie Trainer, and Nesta's Mate

Mate: Nesta

Closest friends: Rhysand and Azriel

Role: General of the Night Court's armies

Cassian is the most openly emotional member of the Illyrian trio, which is saying something considering his primary method of communication is occasionally yelling. His relationship with Nesta develops from antagonism to attraction to a deeply committed mating bond.

He also becomes instrumental in training the Valkyries.

But Cassian is more than Nesta's love interest. He's a general balancing loyalty to Rhys, his responsibilities to the Night Court, and a complicated relationship with Illyrian culture.

Unresolved issue: How will Cassian balance those loyalties if Nesta's increasing role in ancient magical affairs creates tensions within the Inner Circle?

Azriel: Spymaster, Shadowsinger, and Romantic Complication

Confirmed mate: None

Romantic history: Long-standing feelings for Mor; attraction to Elain

Potential romantic storyline: Gwyn, according to fan theories

Role: Night Court spymaster

Azriel is quiet, secretive, deeply loyal, and emotionally unavailable enough to inspire thousands of pages of romantic speculation. He's one of Rhysand's closest friends and an exceptionally skilled spy. For centuries, he harbored feelings for Mor, although she did not reciprocate those feelings romantically.

More recently, Azriel has developed an attraction to Elain. In his Silver Flames bonus chapter, that attraction becomes unmistakable. But Rhysand intervenes, concerned that pursuing Elain could provoke Lucien and create a dangerous political conflict.

The same chapter includes a meaningful interaction with Gwyn, adding another layer to the ongoing conversation about Azriel's romantic future.

What matters going into Book 6: Azriel has no confirmed mate. Neither the Elain nor Gwyn theories should be presented as established canon. And perhaps most importantly, Azriel deserves a character arc beyond whichever woman the fandom wants him to kiss.

Morrigan: The Inner Circle's Unfinished Story

Known as: Mor

Family: The ruling family of the Hewn City

Romantic history: An arranged marriage to Eris that never happened; Azriel's unreciprocated feelings

Status: Significant portions of her history remain unresolved

Mor's story is tied to the Night Court's Court of Nightmares and a brutal family history.

She was once promised to Eris Vanserra, but the arrangement fell apart after her relationship with Cassian became known.

Her family punished her severely and abandoned her in the Autumn Court, where Eris found her but did not personally take her to safety. Mor is romantically interested in women, something she has not openly discussed with most of the Inner Circle.

Her relationship with Azriel is complicated by his long-standing feelings for her, and her history with Eris remains partially unexplained.

Eris has implied that there's more to what happened between them than readers currently understand.

What matters going into Book 6: Mor's history with Eris and her own romantic future remain unfinished.

Amren: Ancient, Powerful, and Still Intimidating

Partner: Varian, Prince of Adriata

Role: Adviser to Rhysand

Status: Returned from her original form and now possessing ordinary High Fae abilities

Amren was once a mysterious, immensely powerful being trapped in a Fae body. During the war with Hybern, she unleashed her true form to help defeat the enemy. She returned afterward as a High Fae without her former extraordinary powers.

Her relationship with Varian continues, although it's not the primary focus of recent books.

Amren's knowledge of ancient languages, magic, and history is still important, especially as mysteries surrounding the Dread Trove and Prythian's origins continue to develop.

Lucien Vanserra and the Autumn Court Family Drama

There are complicated family relationships in ACOTAR.

And then there's the Vanserra family.

Lucien Vanserra: The Mate Nobody Knows What to Do With

Recognized mate: Elain Archeron

Believed father: Beron Vanserra

Strongly implied biological father: Helion, High Lord of the Day Court

Mother: The Lady of the Autumn Court

Allies: Vassa, Jurian, and members of the Night Court

Lucien has spent much of the series being politically displaced. He began as Tamlin's closest friend and emissary in the Spring Court. After the conflict with Hybern and Elain's transformation, he becomes increasingly connected to the Night Court and the human lands.

But he doesn't quite belong anywhere. His mating bond with Elain is unresolved. His relationship with Tamlin is strained. His family history is a nightmare. And there's the small issue of his parentage. Feyre comes to strongly suspect that Helion, not Beron, is Lucien's biological father.

Lucien does not know this.

If the truth comes out, it could have major consequences for succession, alliances, and the politics of the Autumn and Day Courts.

What matters going into Book 6: Lucien is connected to multiple unresolved stories at once: Elain, Vassa, Koschei, Helion, and the Autumn Court.

For someone who doesn't have his own book yet, he has an impressive number of potential problems.

Eris Vanserra: Villain, Ally, or Something More Complicated?

Father: Beron

Mother: The Lady of the Autumn Court

Brother: Lucien, as far as he knows

Position: Heir to the Autumn Court

Eris was initially presented as cruel, manipulative, and involved in Mor's traumatic past.

But as the series progresses, he's revealed to be a more complicated political figure.

He has made secret arrangements with the Night Court and expressed an interest in replacing Beron.

His actions suggest that his public persona may not tell the whole story.

His version of the events involving Mor is especially important, because he has hinted that the Inner Circle does not know everything.

What matters going into Book 6: Eris's true motivations, his history with Mor, and the future of Autumn Court leadership remain unresolved.

Beron Vanserra: The Autumn Court Problem

Beron is the High Lord of the Autumn Court and father of Eris and several other sons.

He is cruel, politically calculating, and deeply invested in maintaining his power.

His history with his wife and Lucien has left enormous damage.

He also remains a potential obstacle to the stability of Prythian.

What matters going into Book 6: Beron's ambitions could become particularly dangerous if the courts are forced into new alliances.

Helion: The Secret That Could Change Everything

Court: Day Court

Position: High Lord

Connection to Lucien: Strongly implied biological father

Helion is charismatic, powerful, and known for his knowledge of spell-cleaving and magical wards. He also has a past romantic relationship with the Lady of the Autumn Court.

Feyre concludes that Lucien may actually be Helion's son. The implications are enormous.

Lucien's true heritage could connect him to the Day Court and potentially affect the political structure of Prythian.

But remember: the secret has not been publicly revealed to Lucien.

The Valkyries: Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie

One of the most important changes in A Court of Silver Flames is the return of the Valkyries.

This female warrior tradition becomes central to Nesta's healing and her friendships with Gwyn and Emerie.

Gwyn Berdara

Gwyn is a priestess living in the library beneath the House of Wind. She's survived tremendous trauma and gradually begins reclaiming her strength through Valkyrie training.

Her friendship with Nesta and Emerie becomes one of the emotional foundations of Silver Flames.

She also participates in the Blood Rite, helping prove that the revived Valkyries deserve to be taken seriously. Gwyn's abilities, heritage, and interactions with Azriel have inspired significant fan speculation. But her future role and any romantic relationship remain unconfirmed.

Emerie

Emerie is an Illyrian woman who owns a shop and has worked to establish independence within a society that severely restricts women's freedom. Her father subjected her to the brutal practice of wing clipping.

Despite that history, Emerie trains with Nesta and Gwyn and survives the Blood Rite.

She and Gwyn reach the summit of Ramiel, a historic achievement.

Emerie's growing friendship with the other Valkyries also connects the group to larger questions about Illyrian culture and the treatment of women.

Why the Valkyries Matter

The revived Valkyries represent something larger than three friends learning to fight.

They challenge deeply rooted expectations about women's strength and roles in Prythian.

And with the new ACOTAR releases officially identified as The Valkyrie Cycle, their development deserves particular attention.

That doesn't guarantee which characters will narrate the next books, but it does make their return especially relevant.

The Other Relationships You Need to Remember

Tamlin and Feyre

Feyre's first major romantic relationship was with Tamlin, High Lord of the Spring Court.

What began as love became controlling and harmful after their shared trauma Under the Mountain.

Feyre eventually left him for Rhysand. Tamlin's actions during the conflict with Hybern complicated the political landscape, and his court remains weakened.

Their romance is over. The political consequences of their history are not.

Lucien, Vassa, and Jurian

Lucien spends considerable time with Vassa and Jurian in the human lands.

The three have developed an alliance and an unconventional household dynamic.

Vassa is a human queen who was cursed by Koschei into taking the form of a firebird.

Jurian is a human military leader who fought alongside the Fae during the war against Hybern. Their relationship with one another is important because of their connections to the human territories and Koschei's growing influence.

Romantic interpretations of this trio remain speculative.

Mor and Eris

Their engagement was arranged for political reasons, but their history ended in violence and estrangement. Both characters have information that readers have not fully received.

Understanding what happened between them may be essential to understanding future relations between the Night and Autumn Courts.

Amren and Varian

Amren and Varian have an established romantic relationship. Varian is a prince of the Summer Court, making the relationship another personal connection between the courts.

While their romance isn't one of the major unresolved mysteries, it's worth remembering when thinking about Prythian's alliances.

Every Confirmed ACOTAR Mating Bond You Need to Know

Let's separate established relationships from fan theories.

Characters

Relationship status

Feyre and Rhysand

Confirmed mates, together

Nesta and Cassian

Confirmed mates, together

Elain and Lucien

Confirmed mates, bond not accepted by Elain

Kallias and Viviane

Confirmed mates, married

Drakon and Miryam

Confirmed mates, married

Azriel and Elain

Not confirmed mates

Azriel and Gwyn

Lucien and Vassa

The biggest point to remember: having a mating bond doesn't automatically mean the characters are destined for a happy romantic ending.

ACOTAR has repeatedly explored the difference between biological or magical bonds and the choices individuals make.

And that distinction is especially important for Elain.

The Biggest ACOTAR Relationship Mysteries Before Book 6

Will Elain Accept Lucien's Mating Bond?

We know Lucien is Elain's mate.

We know Elain has not accepted the bond.

But we don't know what she'll ultimately choose.

Her feelings, desires, and independence matter just as much as the existence of the bond itself.

What Happens Between Elain and Azriel?

Their attraction has been established, but Rhysand has warned Azriel away.

That doesn't resolve anything emotionally.

It simply creates an additional conflict involving Lucien, Rhysand, and the Night Court.

Is Gwyn Connected to Azriel's Future?

Gwyn and Azriel have had meaningful interactions, including in bonus content.

Readers have developed theories about their possible romantic connection.

However, no mating bond or romantic relationship between them has been confirmed.

Will Lucien Learn Who His Father Really Is?

Lucien is unaware that Helion is strongly implied to be his biological father.

A revelation could change how he understands his family and where he belongs.

And depending on what happens in the Autumn Court, it could become a political problem.

What Really Happened Between Mor and Eris?

The full history of Mor and Eris's broken engagement remains incomplete.

Eris has suggested that his actions were more complicated than they appeared.

We still don't know the entire story.

Will Koschei's Return Force New Alliances?

Koschei remains one of the largest threats to Prythian.

His connection to Vassa and past attempts to influence events could bring multiple courts and characters into conflict.

And if Prythian needs to unite again, it's going to require a lot of people who don't particularly like one another to cooperate.

Good luck with that.
