Frequently asked questions
Genre’d is a sister‑hosted book podcast where we read across romance, romantasy, fantasy, thrillers, and the occasional literary curveball. We break down tropes, spice levels, world‑building, and our favorite quotes—plus rapid‑fire recs and chaos. New listeners can start with any episode; show notes always include links, ways to read along, and recommendations .
New episodes drop every other Thursday at 7:00 AM ET. Follow us on Spotify or Apple Podcasts to get the latest episode as soon as it’s live. And in off-weeks, keep an eye on our socials for mini episodes, reels, and bonus recs!
We’re Katy and Elyse—two sisters who read widely and aren’t afraid of a spicy plot or a well‑placed dagger. We bring bold opinions and big love of books, mixing thoughtful analysis with sister banter. Get to know us on our About page.
We’re on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and Amazon Music. You can also listen on our website’s episode pages.

Show notes are spoiler‑free—skim them to decide if you want just the beginning (for the rant + vibes) or the whole episode.
Yes. The main review segment covers major plot points and the ending. Listen to the synopsis + “Things to Say” if you’re avoiding spoilers, then come back after you’ve read.
Absolutely. Where available, we include author- or publisher-provided content notes and add our own where useful. Check the “Content Notes” section in the Show Notes before you listen.
Clear, consistent ratings for intimacy on the page. “Spice” measures explicitness and frequency of sexual content, not overall maturity, violence, or themes.
Quick Legend:
0/5 — Closed Door: Kissing/affection only. Intimacy happens off‑page or is not present. No explicit language.
1/5 — Very Mild / Fade‑to‑Black: Suggestive tension or fade‑to‑black moments. Euphemistic language. No anatomical detail.
2/5 — PG‑13 Suggestive: Some on‑page heat or partial detail; brief scenes. Language is non‑graphic. Focus remains on emotions/romance.
3/5 — Open Door (Some Detail): On‑page scenes with clear anatomical references; a few scenes per book. Explicit language in places.
4/5 — Explicit / Graphic: Multiple explicit scenes with detail; kink or dirty talk may appear; sex is a notable part of the reading experience.
5/5 — Explicit‑Plus: Frequent, extended, or intense scenes (possibly multiple per act); explicit language throughout; may include kink dynamics. Romance is very spice‑forward.
How we rate and what we consider:
On‑page explicitness: anatomical detail vs. euphemism.
Frequency & duration: number and length of scenes.
Language: clinical, euphemistic, or explicit.
Context & tone: whether the scene serves character/plot vs. erotica‑forward.
Kink elements: presence and intensity (e.g., bondage, power play); we score the spice separately from consent/ethics.
Power dynamics & consent: always noted in Content Notes, but do not directly raise/lower the chili score.
Edge cases (how we break ties):
Fade‑to‑black with spicy banter: typically 1/5–2/5 depending on suggestiveness.
One explicit scene, brief: usually 2/5–3/5 (leans 2/5 if light detail).
Many non‑graphic scenes: 3/5 if frequent but not highly explicit.
Kink mentioned but off‑page: doesn’t raise above 2/5.
Accessibility and Content Notes:
Spice ≠ safety. We list content/trigger warnings separately on each episode page (violence, SA, coercion, etc.). Show notes are spoiler‑free; the review segment is spoiler‑full.
“Off Book” is our bonus mini-series where we go… well, off book. It’s a space for unscripted chats, deep dives, author interviews, or whatever’s lighting up our group chat. Think of it as Genre’d’s after-hours—same feed, looser structure, and plenty of banter.
Off Book episodes drop right in the same feed as our regular show—you don’t need a separate subscription or link. Just look for the Off Book artwork in your podcast app.
Off Book usually pops up in our “off weeks” between main episodes, but sometimes we drop one when inspiration strikes (or when our recording goes gloriously off the rails).
It depends on the topic. Some are totally spoiler-free—like when we’re talking tropes or industry trends—while others might discuss specific books. We always label the episode title and description clearly so you know what you’re getting into.
It’s usually us (Katy & Elyse), but we occasionally bring on guests—authors, creators, or fellow readers we love. Guest names and topics are listed right in the title so you can spot them easily.
We consider authors, publicists, and creators whose work fits our audience. Please include: title, pub date, comp titles, trope list, spice level, and why it’s a fit for Genre’d. If pitching a guest, share topic, format (interview or panel), and availability. You can email us at genredpodcast@gmail.com.
