Dire Bound by Sable Sorensen is the kind of romantasy that starts with a pit fighter trying to save her little sister and ends with ancient bloodlines, cursed crowns, soul-hopping villains, direwolf politics, and one of the most disrespectful fake-boyfriend reveals in recent memory.

Where Dire Bound Begins

Dire Bound follows Meryn Cooper, a twenty-three-year-old pit fighter known as the Allycat of the Eastern Quarter.

By day, she works in a laundry facility. By night, she fights in underground rings to keep her family afloat. Her father died in the war against the Siphons, her mother has been deteriorating mentally for years, and Meryn is the one holding everything together for her ten-year-old sister, Saela.

Meryn is tough because she has to be. She is poor, exhausted, overburdened, and trained to survive by Igor, a gruff neighbor who became something like a father figure after watching her pick fights and lose them.

She also has a boyfriend named Lee, who tends her wounds after fights, smells like pine soap, and seems like a sweet, steady piece of normalcy in a brutal world.

So obviously, that man is hiding something enormous.

Saela Is Taken

The entire plot is set in motion when Meryn discovers that Saela’s bed is empty. The Nabbers have taken her.

After days of searching, Meryn realizes she has only one path left. She enlists in the king’s army, hoping it will get her closer to the front lines and give her a better chance of finding her sister.

But Lee tells her that the recruits are not going to the front. They are being entered into the Bonding Trials.

The Bonding Trials are a deadly climb up an icy mountain where direwolves choose riders.

Refuse to climb, and you are hunted. Fail to reach the top, and you probably die. Very normal government behavior.

Meryn does not want a wolf. She does not want glory. She does not want power.

She wants Saela.

Meryn Bonds With Anassa

During the Bonding Trials, Meryn intervenes when another recruit, Jonah, attacks a girl on the mountain. This gains her allies in Izabel and Venna, twins from a Bonded family who understand the mountain and help her survive the climb.

At the summit, the direwolves begin choosing their riders.

Meryn keeps mentally insisting she does not want to bond.

Unfortunately for her, Anassa has other plans.

Anassa is the oldest and most powerful direwolf on the mountain. She has not bonded in over a hundred years. But she chooses Meryn anyway, forcing the connection and flooding her with painful visions before slamming a wall down between them.

Every other Bonded gets a colored streak in their hair from their wolf.

Meryn’s hair turns completely silver-white.

Subtle? No.

Suspicious? Extremely.

After the bond, Anassa refuses to carry Meryn back down the mountain. Meryn has to run to the castle gates alone, arriving just in time, only to find Anassa waiting there like she was testing her the entire time.

Because apparently ancient direwolves love a dramatic entrance.

Meryn Cannot Leave

After the Trials, Meryn tries to sneak away and go after Saela herself.

But the bond with Anassa is too new. Being separated from her wolf causes unbearable pain. Meryn is trapped in the Bonded world whether she wants to be there or not.

She is now part of a system she never asked to join, with a wolf who barely speaks to her, in a castle full of danger, politics, and people who absolutely do not want a commoner rising through the ranks.

Lee Is Actually Prince Killian

At the Presentation Ball, Meryn learns that Lee, her sweet boyfriend from home, is actually Crown Prince Killian Valtiere.

Same eyes. Same scent. Same man.

Different little secret.

Meryn is furious, understandably. Killian explains that he hid his identity because he wanted to be loved as himself and not as the prince. He claims his feelings are real and that she could ask him for anything, even his crown.

At this point, he still seems like a romantic liar rather than a full-blown nightmare.

But the cracks are already there.

During the ball, the king triggers a culling, forcing wolves to kill the weak. Anassa protects Meryn, but the violence makes it clear that the Bonded world is built on brutality.

Later, Meryn is attacked in the corridor, and something overtakes her. She kills the man brutally and does not understand what happened.

Stark Therion, the terrifying Alpha of the Daemos pack, is one of the most important people to remember.

At first, he seems cruel, dangerous, and openly hostile toward Meryn. He trains her brutally, attacks her without warning, and constantly pushes her to think like a leader.

But Dire Bound is very much a “the mean one was protecting her the whole time” book.

Stark gives Meryn a private room. He watches her closely. He trains her hard because he knows she needs to survive. His wolf, Cratos, is Anassa’s mate, which creates an intense pull between Stark and Meryn even before they understand the full truth.

Also, his office has bookshelves and a reading chair with a soft blanket.

So yes, he is terrifying.

But he is also, tragically for everyone’s emotional stability, interesting.

Anassa Finally Speaks

For much of the book, Anassa blocks Meryn out. She refuses to explain herself, refuses to communicate clearly, and mostly operates on regal silence and judgment.

Eventually, Meryn brings her a peace offering of mountain sage, and Anassa finally drops the wall enough to speak.

Anassa does not fully trust Meryn yet, but she has been waiting for her. She knows much more than she can say, especially about Meryn’s bloodline, the crown, and the curse that has kept the truth hidden.

Her silence is not just stubbornness.

It is tied to ancient magic, old secrets, and the history of the Sturmfrost throne.

Meryn Becomes Strategos Alpha

The direwolves eventually convene and choose Anassa to lead the pack.

Because Anassa is Meryn’s wolf, this makes Meryn Strategos Alpha.

Meryn, a commoner who did not even want to bond, suddenly holds one of the most powerful positions in the Bonded world.

Not everyone is thrilled about this.

Meryn proposes that Egith command at the front while she finishes training, and Anassa backs her up by projecting her voice into every Bonded mind.

A casual little “my wolf is ancient and terrifying” power move.

Meryn’s Visions Are Not Madness

Meryn has visions and sleepwalking episodes throughout the book, and they mirror what everyone believed was her mother’s mental illness.

She sees things that are not there. She wakes up in places from her nightmares. She hears voices and experiences strange flashes of history.

Meryn is terrified that she is becoming like her mother.

But the truth is much bigger.

After finding Saela, Meryn and Killian make a plan.

At graduation, Meryn will kill King Cyril.

During the ceremony, the king triggers yet another battle. Meryn coordinates the pack, positions herself near the king, kicks the wolf-pommel sword from his hands, seizes it, and feels power surge through her.

The blade responds to her blood.

Then she beheads the king.

For a brief second, it looks like she has done it. She has killed the monster. She has taken action. She has saved the day.

Stark explains that so many of the things Meryn thought came from Killian were actually from him.

He chose her dress.

He gave her the private room.

He killed the man who threatened her before the Trials.

When Meryn wears the crown, she sees the truth.

Queen Chiara Sturmfrost was the last true ruler before she was murdered by a Siphon named Brightbane. A servant escaped with the infant heir and the opal necklace.
